THE INTEGRITAS INSTITUTE'S HEALTHCARE ETHICS ESSAY CONTEST

ELIGIBILITY: Any health professional graduate or advanced student enrolled at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the colleges of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, applied health sciences, or public health. Employees of the John Paul II Newman Center and members of the Board of Advisors of the Integritas Institute are not eligible.

ESSAY TOPIC: "The Nature of the Patient / Practitioner Relationship" In the course of addressing the above topic, your entry should consider one or more of the following issues:

-- The patient / healthcare practitioner relationship in the context of contemporary healthcare;

-- The role of prayer, religion and faith in the patient-practitioner relationship;

-- The importance of moral virtues and principles in the patient-practitioner relationship;

-- The place of authority, trust, duty and autonomy in the patient-practitioner relationship.

FORMAT AND LENGTH: Essay must be submitted in English, typed, double-spaced, 1500 - 2000 words on 8‡" x 11" white paper, in Times New Roman 12 point font. Send 6 copies. Do not include your name on the copies; instead, use the last four digits of your telephone phone number as an identifier in the upper right hand corner of the first page of each copy.

JUDGING CRITERIA: A panel of the Integritas Institute's Board of Advisors will review all entries. They will be judged based on the following criteria: depth of analysis, presentation of argument(s) and ideas, originality and style. The Integritas Institute will publish all prize-winning entries on our website. The grand prize-winning entry will be submitted to local, state and federal government representatives.

SUBMITTING PROCEDURES AND DEADLINES: All contestants must submit 6 paper copies of their essay, one electronic copy on a floppy disk (Windows compatible format,) and a completed entry form postmarked by December 31, 2002. Entry forms can be downloaded from
